Baba

Page history last edited by Jessica Jackson 15 years, 3 months ago

Baba-Baba is Amir's father, born in 1933. He has a huge influence in this story so far, even though he has not had many speaking roles. He is the main reason as to why everything has happened so far with Amir and his thoughts and decision making. Baba is very wealthy, fair, and generous. His wealth and generosity is shown through a two story orphanage completely funded through his own pockets. He paid for the engineers, electricians, plumbers, laborers, and also had to pay some city officials because their "mustaches needed oiling" (pp. 13). His fairness can be shown through him treating everyone the same. He treated his hazar's son Hassan just the same as he would treat Amir. There was more to this fairness than meets the eye. He loves soccer, politics, and buisness. Him and his friends hang out in his smoking room where Baba likes to drink a little whiskey and "flatten his pipe" for "grown up time" that Amir was rarely allowed to attend. Baba throughout the story displays that he is upset/displeased with Amir. He feels that his son is always "buried in those books or shuffling around the house like he is lost in a dream" (pp. 21). Baba wishes that his son Amir would stand up for himself when being picked on instead of letting everyone take advantage of him. He feels as though Amir cannot be his son on account of Amir not having any of the same qualities that he had when he was his age. Baba "had a glare that would drop the devil to his knees and beg for mercy" and when he would go to parties " all six-foot-five of him thundered into the room, and attention shifted to him like sunflowers turning to the sun." (pp. 13). There was once a lore or rumor that he had wrestled a black bear with his bare hands, which he has the scars to prove it. He was married to Sofia Akrami who was a highly educated, beautiful, and virtuous. She was known to Baba as "his princess" (pp.15). "His princess" had unfortunatley died giving birth to his son Amir, which still is unclarified whether or not he is wishing never happened and that it was all Amir's fault. He did say that "If I hadn't seen the doctor pull him out of my wife with my own eyes, I'd never believe he's my son" (pp. 23) which are very powerful words that could lead us in that direction. The part that contradicts this is on page 75. This is the part in the story where Amir has won the tournoment and brought back the infamous trophy (the blue kite) that had Baba acting very proud of his son and his accomplishments for once. It was a bonding experience in which he may have started to realize that his son does have a little Baba in him. He drinks and smokes alot. i think he is finally accepting his son now. Gets sick with cancer and is stubborn about taking medicane for it. Losses alot of weight. He is embarrased of what has happen to them. they have little money in the U.S. doesn't want to be on welfare. very happy his only son got married and i think thats why he didin't take his pain meds.
