Page history last edited by Jessica Jackson 15 years, 4 months ago

Sohrab- is the child of Hassan and Farzana.  Amir finds out about Sohrab’s existence when he visits Rahim Khan  in Pakistan.  “They named him Sohrab, after Hassan’s favorite hero from the Shahnamah, as you know, Amir jan” (211).  Rahim Khan gives Amir letters from Hassan and Amir learns that the letters are old and that Hassan and Farzana were brutally murdered by the Taliban.  Amir soon learns why Rahim Khan asked him to come to Pakistan.  He asks him to rescue Sohrab from the orphanage.  “Amir jan, I summoned you here because I wanted to see you before I die, but that’s not all” (220).   Amir also learns that Sohrab is not only Hassan’s child but his nephew because Hassan is his half-brother. Sohrab is a round and dynamic character.  Round because he is a well developed and closely involved character in the story-he is not only the son of Amir’s old friend Hassan but his nephew.  Most importantly Sohrab becomes the source of deliverance for Amir’s struggle with his past.  Sohrab is a dynamic character because he undergoes a series of life altering situations and changes from a happy child with a family to a depressed child living in an orphanage.   He also develops from an ordinary life to that of a hero when he saves Amir from Assef. Amir is taken to Sohrab’s orphanage with the help of Farid.  At the orphanage in Kabul Amir learns that Sohrab was sold to a Taliban official.  Amir sets up a meeting with the man and learns that Sohrab is made to do terrible things and that his captor is none other than the demon Assef, Assef who many years earlier did terrible things to Hassan.  Amir fights Hassan for Sohrab who is made to watch.  Moments later Sohrab has a piece of redemption.  “His hand was cocked above his shoulder, holding the cup of the slingshot at the end of the elastic band which was pulled all the way back.  There was something in the cup, something shiny and yellow.  I blinked the blood from my eyes and saw it was one of the brass balls from the ring in the table base.  Sohrab had the slingshot pointed to Assef’s face” (290).  Sohrab shoots Assef in the eye and is calm enough to grab Amir and lead him to the safety of Farid’s truck.   It turns out Sohrab is as deadly with a slingshot as Hassan was
